Retail Fixture Materials Compared: Wood, Metal, Acrylic and MDF

Ask a fixture manufacturer for a quote on the same design in two different materials and the price can move by 30–50% either way — which is exactly why material choice deserves its own decision, separate from the fixture’s shape or layout.

Wood and engineered wood (MDF/plywood)

MDF is the most common material for retail fixtures needing a premium, warm finish — display counters, wall units, showroom furniture. It takes paint and laminate finishes well and is relatively inexpensive to fabricate, but it’s vulnerable to moisture and heavy impact over time, and isn’t the right choice for outdoor or high-humidity locations without proper sealing. Plywood is more impact-resistant than MDF but usually looks less refined without a laminate or veneer finish.

Metal (mild steel, aluminium)

Powder-coated metal dominates gondola shelving and any fixture expected to take heavy daily handling — it resists dents, supports more weight per shelf, and holds up over years of restocking better than wood-based options. It costs more upfront and takes longer to fabricate (welding, powder coating) than MDF, which is why it’s usually reserved for structural or high-wear fixtures rather than every fixture in a store.

Acrylic

Acrylic is used where transparency, a lit effect, or a premium, glossy look matters — jewellery cases, cosmetics counters, illuminated signage elements. It scratches more easily than glass or metal and costs more than MDF for an equivalent size, but it’s significantly lighter than glass for the same visual effect, which matters for anything wall-mounted or frequently moved.

Corrugated board

Corrugated is the standard material for short-life POSM — product launch displays, promotional FSUs, anything meant to last a campaign rather than years. It’s the cheapest option by a wide margin and can be printed on directly, but it isn’t meant to survive repeated handling or humid conditions, and reusing a corrugated display beyond its intended campaign usually looks worn quickly.

ACP (aluminium composite panel)

More common in signage and cladding than fixtures themselves, ACP is lightweight, weather-resistant and takes a clean printed or painted finish — a common choice for outdoor-facing storefront elements that need to survive Indian weather without the weight or cost of solid metal.

Material Relative cost Durability Best for
MDF/plywood Low–Medium Medium (indoor only) Counters, wall units, showroom furniture
Metal (MS/aluminium) Medium–High High Gondolas, structural/high-wear fixtures
Acrylic Medium–High Medium (scratches) Showcases, lit displays, premium finishes
Corrugated board Very low Low (short-life) Campaign POSM, launch displays
ACP Medium High (weatherproof) Outdoor signage, storefront cladding

FAQs

Which material is cheapest for retail fixtures? Corrugated board is cheapest for short-life POSM; among permanent fixture materials, MDF is generally the most economical.

Is MDF durable enough for a permanent store fixture? Yes, for most retail environments, provided it’s properly sealed/laminated and not exposed to high moisture or heavy impact — metal is the better choice for high-wear structural fixtures.

What material is best for outdoor retail structures? Metal and ACP are the standard choices for outdoor durability; MDF and corrugated are not suitable without significant weatherproofing.
